Business United

A wheeling, dealing, fast moving world of deceits, defeats and gate receipts....

What is it?

Business United is a football-themed business game. In a quick fire, action packed football league season, teams take control of their own club and face the age old dilemma of juggling healthy financial returns with chasing silverware.

How does it work?

Business United is highly versatile with no previous knowledge of football necessary.

Teams are placed in charge of their own football club for one season. The main objective of the challenge is to finish as high up the 'Footie 100 Index' as possible. Although separate honours are available for winning the football and business leagues, the Footie 100 Index is linked to the performances in these leagues combined.

The football season comprises six simulated weeks and six virtual matches against other teams in the room. Each week begins with an address from the football league's chief executive - outlining their plans and vision for the future. Based on the hints given by this speech, teams plan their strategies: assessing available footballing talent; negotiating to trade players; managing and investing resources and generating a healthy income stream throughout the season.

To begin, teams delegate specific job roles to each member so that everyone is involved and has input into their club's performance. Each team member wears their club colours and various props that designate their role.

Each role comes with its own set of responsibilities, the jobs include director of football, chairman, finance director and marketing manager. These job roles require team members to build their club's finances by buying, selling and investing in a range of shares and certificates as well as building a stadium and fan base in order to generate gate receipts and revenue.

Each week of the season, a transfer window opens allowing teams to buy and sell players. The week also contains periods of financial and strategic planning, as well as review meetings and sports news reports to deliver the results of the all important matches.

Each team begins with a squad of players with different skill ratings. By trading, buying and selling players, the teams aim to build a stronger footballing squad. The director of football can also dictate sporting tactics and formations

On Saturday of each week, the teamsheets are fed into a computer and a simulated match is played. Results are dependent on the skill ratings of the players, last minute news of injuries, scandals or developments around the championship and that important element of luck.

During the game, referees provide assistance and advice for the teams, but also possess the power to punish offences made by individuals. Offences can be met with yellow and red cards, and any team member unfortunate or devious enough to be red carded will be ordered to the sin bin; where they must wait until they can be bought out (if desired) by their club during the next transfer window.

Beset by distractions as well as opportunities, each team member will need to adapt their plans, learn from their mistakes and respond to events, all under the pressure of the clock and the budget. At the end of the season, the final football league table will be announced as well as the business league positions. These league standings are then collated and the ultimate champions of the Footie 100 Index are crowned!
